McCarthy Tire Service has been a distinguished Bandag Retreader for over 30 years. The retread shop headquartered in Wilkes-Barre, PA is one of the largest in the United States. A $1.5 million dollar expansion of the Bandag Retread Shop was completed in July 1997. It was the second expansion in just six years.

With its latest company acquisitions, McCarthy Tire has been able to add two more retread facilities to the company. Acquired in 2000 was a retread plant in Kearneysville, West Virginia. The most recent retread plant was acquired in 2003, and is located in Manassas, Virginia.

These premier retread operations currently output approximately 700 tires per day and have the capacity of retreading up to 1,200 tires per day.
McCarthy Tire is a completely certified shop and has over 40 Master Craftsmen. We believe that highly skilled and trained employees combined with the latest technology equals a superior product.
The recent expansions and latest equipment updates put McCarthy Tire on the cutting edge of technology. Let us walk you through some of the phases of our retread operation.

Initial Inspection

SHEAROGRAPHY

This high tech piece of equipment is another type of inspection machine, but it checks a tire more extensively than the NDT II-B machine. The Insight 7400 Shearography machine, used by McCarthy Tire, specifically checks the whole tire, not just the crown of the tire, and finds any damaged areas, such as the cords, that would not be picked up by the NDI II-B machine or the human eye and would cause the casing to fail

Skiving

COMPUTERIZED BUFFING
The 8200 Computerized buffer is used to inflate a tire to normal running size. From there the tire is designed exclusively for the Bandag retreading process. Lastly, it is trued for a better-balanced retread providing even tread wear and more miles.

Repair

EXTRUDER
The 6400 Extruder is a piece of equipment that applies a thin layer of cushion (1/32") to the buffed tread of each tire. This cushion is the adhesion that will allow the tread rubber that is applied at the builder station to stick to the tire.

COMPUTERIZED BUILDER

McCarthy Tire uses two different types of tire builders in their retread plants, the OPS 5400 and the 5130 model. The Optimum Splice Match 5400 or OSM is the most high tech tire builder on the market today. It is run by computer and will automatically cut the tread to the exact setting, for that particular tire. With the tread rubber being cut exactly, the tire will have a perfect splice where each end of the rubber meets. The model 5130 is also an advanced tire builder. The rotary tread knife on the 5130 is capable of cutting 20" wide tread.

FINAL INSPECTION
This is the last step of the retread process. At this location the tire is thoroughly examined to make sure everything is ok with the new retread. Once determined that the tire is road worthy, the retread will be branded with McCarthy Tire's Bandag Dealer Code and the current week and year. Once branded the retread will be painted and sent to the shipping area to be distributed to the proper location and customer.

HOW DO WE TRACK YOUR INVENTORY
McCarthy Tire uses two different methods to track customer tires through their three shops, the Tire Ticket System, and the Roadware computer program.
Tire Ticket System - This system is the method which McCarthy Tire uses to continuously track the tire through the process. A pressure sensitive label is affixed to the tire when it is picked up and a tire or rim receipt is left with the customer. This ensures control of tire inventories. The Tire Ticket System is currently used at the McCarthy Tire Kearneysville and Manassas plants.

Trucking companies have chosen McCarthy Tire for over 77 years. We acknowledge that with our confidence and dedication we will continue to deliver the outstanding personal service our customers have come to expect.

INITIAL INSPECTION NDT II-B
The initial inspection of the casing is performed by trained inspectors and helps ensure that only sound casings are retreadable. This provides you with retread dependability down the road. The tire is then checked over with the NDT-II B.
The NDT II-B uses electrical impulses to detect nails, nail holes, cuts, tears and bad repairs and takes less than 32 seconds to completely inspect a tire.

Shearography

SKIVING

This process involves a certified technician viewing the casing, as well as the buffed circumference to see if there are any cuts or abrasions that will require a repair to be done to that casing before it is retreaded

Computerized Buffing

REPAIR

This process involves a certified Master Craftsman making all necessary repairs to a casing before it is sent to the tire builder to have the specified tread rubber applied

CURING
This is the next to last stage of the retread process. In this process the retread is put into a heated chamber where the tread rubber that was put on at the build station now molds or "cures" with the casing. With McCarthy Tire's latest expansion, each retread shop is now capable of curing 110 tires every four hours.

Final Inspection

Roadware
- This computer system allows the tracking of customer and stock tires through the retread shop. This new program was put into effect in the spring of 2002. Roadware allows the tracking of a retread through the system right down to the exact time that each retread was completed at each station. This system is currently in use at the McCarthy Tire Wilkes Barre retread plant.
